Class 7

Welcome to year 6 at Whitecotes Primary Academy with Mrs Crease and 25 pupils. We are also very lucky to have Mrs Gilbert in class on Friday afternoons and our tai chi instructor on Wednesday afternoons.

We are entering our Autumn school term of 2017-2018. The topics we have planned are: Darwin's Delights, Pharaohs, Stargazers, Off with her Head!, Allotment and Scream Machine. This half term our focus is 'Darwin's Delights.'

Our Classroom

Things to Remember:

  • Spelling books, homework books and reading books must be in school everyday.
  • Monday - New spellings to be given for the week.
  • Wednesday and Thursday - Y6 PE, all children will need their PE kits in school.
  • Friday - Spelling test.

Expectations in Y6

Homework
Y6 will have weekly year group spellings, which will be tested on Friday. Please ensure your child is practising their times tables at home to develop their fluency. These are crucial for Y6. As well as this, they will have homework given in their homework book when necessary. This may be English or Maths and it will be given on varied days depending on the children's learning.

PE

PE is a statutory requirement. Y6 PE is currently every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. All children are expected to have the correct school PE kit each week; navy blue shorts, navy blue jogging bottoms, white tshirt, pumps or trainers. Unless it is raining, snowing, extremely windy or frosty, Y6 PE will take place outside, so children will need to bring appropriate clothing, i.e. a jumper (without a hood) if it is cold and trainers if it is wet. Children must not come to school with jewellery on i.e. necklaces, bracelets etc. and if children wear earrings, they must be able to take them out for PE. Children with long hair also need to tie their hair back for PE.

Reading at Home

Children are expected to read frequently at home. They should read independently, as well as having the opportunity to read to/with their adult. Children in Y6 need to increase their reading pace. This year, Y6 are taking part in the '100 books to read before leaving Y6' challenge. This challenge encourages children to read a range of books and expand their love of reading. Every time a child reads a book they get a raffle ticket to add to our raffle and each term, a raffle ticket is picked and the winner will receive a prize.

Pen Licence

We will be reviewing the Y6 pen licences this year.  We will only be giving pen licences to the children who are fluently joining their writing and are forming their letters accurately. Any writing your child does at home, please encourage them to write joined up. Children will learn to select the correct writing equipment for each task. For example, a pencil for draft writing.

Autumn 1: Darwin's Delights

Our Autumn 1 topic is Darwin's Delights. Our learning will be based around evolution, inheritance and animals. Keep checking back here to see some photos of the work we have produced.
